Puppetry is a great pastime for many reasons. Children acting out stories, using their imagination and creativity, and just plain staying occupied are 3 examples. But that’s not what I’m writing about today.

Today I want to talk about why doorway theaters in particular are helpful. First, they’re portable. Would the children like to act out a puppet show for grandparents, or perhaps entertain elderly or hospitalized individuals? No problem! Just fold up the theater, sling it in a bag with your puppets and rods and you’re in business. With the large wooden puppet screen, such a trip would be….inconvenient.

Then there’s the fact that doorway theaters are easily stored. Think about it. The average wooden theater takes up four square feet of floor space, not including the amount of room needed for puppeteers to move around it. Just for fun, unfold a newspaper and lay it flat on the floor. There. Now leave it in place for a couple of days, and only walk around it. Convenient, no? Of course not. Now think about how nice it would be to fold up that piece of paper and not have to look at it anymore.

Finally, Doorway Theaters are versatile. Leave out the lower curtain and you’ve got the perfect backdrop for a comedy routine, a play, or a dance.

And? When playtime is over, take it down, fold it up, and put it away.

Doorway Theaters: Our mission is a job for every puppet.

One struggle I have had as a homeschooling mom is getting my very wiggly boys interested in any kind of literature. They’d much rather be wrestling than sit and listen to a story. One day I thought, “What the hey? Why should they have to sit still for a story when they could act it out instead?”

Great thought, except for how shy the boys are about performing.

And then there’s the wrestling issue. Crops up when I least expect it.

Having them act out the story with puppets is a great solution. It gets the boys physically involved and they are motivated to listen more closely to the original story so as to learn the plot. If we take a little creative license with things during the performance, well….that just adds to the fun, right?
