Puppetry is a great pastime for many reasons. Children acting out stories, using their imagination and creativity, and just plain staying occupied are 3 examples. But that’s not what I’m writing about today.

Today I want to talk about why doorway theaters in particular are helpful. First, they’re portable. Would the children like to act out a puppet show for grandparents, or perhaps entertain elderly or hospitalized individuals? No problem! Just fold up the theater, sling it in a bag with your puppets and rods and you’re in business. With the large wooden puppet screen, such a trip would be….inconvenient.

Then there’s the fact that doorway theaters are easily stored. Think about it. The average wooden theater takes up four square feet of floor space, not including the amount of room needed for puppeteers to move around it. Just for fun, unfold a newspaper and lay it flat on the floor. There. Now leave it in place for a couple of days, and only walk around it. Convenient, no? Of course not. Now think about how nice it would be to fold up that piece of paper and not have to look at it anymore.

Finally, Doorway Theaters are versatile. Leave out the lower curtain and you’ve got the perfect backdrop for a comedy routine, a play, or a dance.

And? When playtime is over, take it down, fold it up, and put it away.

Imagination is a big theme here at Doorway Theaters. When the Cream Theater was conceived, our collective imagination ran wild. Well, see for yourself:

You think we’ve gone completely crazy, don’t you? Okay, here’s the exciting secret: The cream theater is very plain.

Why is that so exciting, you may wonder? Simple! How fun would it be to let your children decorate the theater themselves? All it takes is the theater, some fabric markers or paint, and a whole lot of creative enthusiasm.

Maybe you throw a puppet party and all the guests help decorate the theater. Have them each sign their handiwork and your child has a personalized memory to last for years.

Or perhaps you’d like to tie dye the theater! Here you go!!! It’s all ready, just tie and dye.

It’s been a while since we introduced a print fabric theater. Solid colors are fantastic of course, but a print can really liven things up. In the spirit of liveliness we searched high and low for a new print to enjoy. Several candidates were considered, and in the end we settled on a definite winner.

So here it is, Internets! The floral theater. Da da da DAAAAA (feel free to imagine trumpets here. We’d bring you real trumpeting if any of us knew how to play, but we don’t. Sorry.)

Would you like to see the flowers up close? Yes? Terrific! Here they are:

The burgundy flowers have green leaves and pink accents. The small blue flowers are a great complement and really complete the print.

During the creation of this theater, we imagined it as a beautiful backdrop to a dance routine. (Just use the top two curtains hanging straight.) Can you see it? Whether it’s ballet, tap, jazz, or a personal creation all its own, a dance performance would only be enhanced with this theater as backdrop.

The blue streak has ended here at Doorway Theaters, and we’re looking forward to a summer tan. All right, yes it’s a bit early to be thinking about summer in January…unless we were in the Southern hemisphere. Hey, that’s the ticket! We’ll just get our imagination cranking and pretend that we’re all enjoying a sunny day at the beach.

Speaking of imagination, a doorway theater is a great way for children to exercise their creativity regardless of the weather. (Didja like that segue? Thank you…thankyouverymuch. We’ll be here all week.)

Is it too wet or cold to go outside? Do the kids need an outlet for all that bottled up energy? Have them put on a puppet show! You can have your theater set up in less than 2 minutes, the kids can play for hours, and there’s no messy cleanup.

Oh yes, we mentioned tan. Well, here it is! Tada!!! The tan theater, in all its glory.

A more understated look than the peach theater, for example, the tan is a quiet backdrop to the real star of the show.

Something we here at Doorway Theaters love is variation on a theme. The Green Stripe theater has proven to be quite popular (in fact, we’re sold out!), and we’re proud to introduce a new theater: the Blue Stripe theater.

We’re all about new options here at Doorway Theaters (look for a few new announcements this week!). The latest color introduction is the Olive Stripe theater. The olive is a more sedate color, to be sure. The great thing about this theater is how it doesn’t steal the show from performers. Easy on the eyes, this theater quietly sets the stage so your child is the true star.

As you can see, there’s an interesting check pattern. Again, it’s very quiet and unassuming, but this theater is a solid performer.

When I think about theaters, especially Broadway theaters, the first color that comes to mind is burgundy. Those big thick velvety curtains that hang across the stage before the performance begins just add to the excitement, don’t they?

That’s why I’m pleased to announce a new color for Doorway Theaters: burgundy!

Just like all the other theaters, the burgundy comes with the two upper curtains, the lower curtain, two curtain rods, and two puppets. How fun would it be to put on a play, puppet show, or a musical with a theater reminiscent of great performance halls worldwide?

One of my personal favorites is the green stripe theater. It doesn’t show up in the main pic, but if you look closely there’s a dainty pink element in the stripes, which looks just adorable in person. I’m including a close-up of the fabric so you can see for yourself. (I’m helpful that way.)

My good friend Shirley helped out with sewing this particular color, and I think she did a fantastic job. She’s a great supporter of the recovery center. Heck, she’s a great supporter for me! Whenever I need help, I know I can count on Shirley. She was nominated for Woman of the Year locally, and she’ll always be a winner in my book.

I’ve long thought that the red, white, and blue plaid theaters are among the most fun choices available. When I found that fabric I scooped up as much as possible! Like all of the products we offer, this theater comes with the two top curtains and large bottom panel to hide aspiring puppeteers.

The plaid also makes a great backdrop for dance or comedic performances, if your little guy or gal wants to put on a show. Here’s a close-up of the print.

A really fun color option is the bright peach. The mother of an 8-year-old girl chose this color when I had the theaters available at a local craft show. She was excited to surprise her daughter with it. It’s definitely a bold choice. If there’s a young lady in your life who appreciates strong colors, this is the theater for her.
